The
mission of the Data Mining, Database and Multimedia (DDM) research group
is to conduct leading edge research in
data science, AI, large language models, machine learning, deep learning,
data mining, multimedia information systems, disaster information management,
big data analytics, database management systems, and security.

Dr. Mei-Ling Shyu
has been a Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Division of Energy, Matter and Systems, School of Science and Engineering,
University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) since August 2022.
Prior to UMKC, she was the Associate Chair and Full/Associate/Assistant
Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE),
University of Miami (UM). She received her PhD degree
from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and three Master
degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Restaurant, Hotel,
Institutional, and Tourism Management, all from Purdue University,
West Lafayette, IN, USA.
Her research interests include data science, AI, large language models,
machine learning, deep learning, data mining, multimedia information
systems, disaster information management,
big data analytics, database management systems, and security.
She has authored and co-authored 2 books and more than 330 technical
papers published in various prestigious journals, book chapters, and
refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Shyu was awarded
the 2021 IEEE TCMC Service Award,
2020 IEEE Big Data Security Woman of Achievement Award,
2012 Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, and
ACM 2012 Distinguished Scientists Award.
She received
the Best Student Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Multimedia Information Processing and
Retrieval in 2022, the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2016,
the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2016,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2014,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International
Symposium on Multimedia in 2013,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2012,
Provost Research Award from UM in 2012,
the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2011,
the Best Student Paper Award from the
Third IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing in 2009,
the Johnson A. Edosomwan Scholarly Productivity Award
from the College of Engineering at UM in
2007, and the Excellence in the Research and Application of Advanced
Computing and Internet Technologies to Further NOAA's Service to the
Nation Metadata Management Award from NOAA TECH 2004.
Dr. Shyu serves/served
as an Associate Editor for several journals including
IEEE MultiMedia,
IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing,
IEEE Transactions on Services Computing,
IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems,
IEEE Transactions on Multimedia,
IEEE Transactions on SMC-Part C: Applications and Reviews, etc. and
on the editorial board of many other journals.
She received the Best Associate Editor (AE) Award from IEEE
Transactions on Multimedia in 2022 and IEEE Transactions on
Human-Machine Systems in 2021.
She has been a guest editor of many journal special issues, a program
chair/vice chair of more than 50 IEEE and ACM international conferences,
symposiums, and workshops, and a member of organizing committees and
technical program committees for more than 200 international meetings.
She was the Chair of IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on
Multimedia Computing (TCMC), the Vice Chair of TCMC,
a steering committee member (representing
Computer Society) of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia
and Expo, and a steering committee member (representing Computer Society)
of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.
She is a member of the Executive Committee of TCMC, and a
member of the IEEE SMC Society Technical
Committee on Knowledge Acquisition in Intelligent Systems.
She is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, AIMBE, AAIA, and SIRI.
